Moreover there’s Jerzy Pilch (doubled in his presence on the nomination list as there are his journal and novel) in duel with “the great” – Wiesław Myśliwski (definitely a possible champion). But the competition is very strong and it’s difficult not to appreciate also Ziemowit Szczerek’s honest and profound depiction of Ukraine vs Poland in his Przyjdzie Mordor i nas zje, czyli tajna historia Słowian. Kurz i krew – a very moving portrait of the city that unfortunately tends to be just a sad dot on the mental map of our Europe. Personally, I have some favourites among nominated books and for sure I will keep my fingers crossed for Małgorzata Rejmer and her reportage book Bukareszt. The twenty books nominated for 2014 Nike prize for literature look very promising.
